Our primary function is to supply the media with images from a variety of equestrian events, from Pony Club mini-ODE’s to International Horse Trials and pretty much anything that involves a horse! Whilst we attend a number of equestrian events we are NOT event photographers in that we do not offer on-site print sales. There are a number of companies offering this facility, two of the better ones being ES Photography and Trafford Photography.

Whilst the majority of our work is for the media, it is a sad fact of life that only a small percentage of it ever goes to press. Gone are the days when a picture editor would want hard copy that would then be scanned. These days, it is far simpler to upload a hi-res digital file, sometimes whilst (literally) in the field and within seconds of taking the shot. Consequently, there isn’t sufficient demand to warrant having our own full scale print facility any more so any such requests are fulfilled by a commercial lab. This set up pre-dates any equestrian involvement and our entire workflow* has evolved to suit this. It is a system that works not only for us but also the picture editors we deal with and whilst we have looked into alternatives to appease the insecure amongst us, until they are prepared to pay for the extra work involved we will continue with this process.

Apart from the media we do have close ties with some clubs and associations and we will cover their ‘off-the-field’ activities, e.g Black-Tie Dinners, Awards Nights, Charity Balls and Fundraisers etc. We have a fully portable studio with backdrops, trains and lights to capture the guests in all their finery. We now have a portable print option for such occasions/

We also work with individuals looking for promotional photographs to be used in brochures and on websites.  So if you come under either category and require a photographer we would be pleased if you considered our services. You will be too.

As we evolve we are continually looking for new areas we can diverge in to. Hence, we now offer an Equestrian Portrait Service: think of it as an Olan Mills for the horse in your life though we’ll leave the makeover to you! You might already have a library of images of you and your horse in action but any of the interaction between horse and owner? Or those capturing the character of the horse, that which makes it special to you. If not, now’s your chance.

We have witnessed a surge in the number of requests from individuals for digital copies for use on social networking websites such as Facebook, a demand that is growing almost daily. So, in keeping with our evolutionary process we are pleased to now offer this. It is an option the lab is looking into as part of its service but in the meantime we can handle any requests emailed to: enquiries@emmelleff.co.uk

*Workflow: As stated elsewhere, we are photographers first and foremost and whilst ‘The Perfect Shot’ continues to elude us we still strive to get the very best out of each and every photograph we take. Hence, we shoot in RAW format, which is often referred to as a digital negative and like its film based predecessor it allows us far more control over the final image. We know many event photographers shoot straight to jpeg, allowing the camera to determine appropriate settings and in most instances this is probably adequate. However, to meet our own exacting standards we prefer RAW.

Taking photographs is the easy part, he real work begins once all the images have been downloaded. They are previewed, weaker ones deleted and the chsen ones processed. For the best quality images we convert the RAW images to TIFF’s which are then individually assessed and calibrated to obtain optimum colour balance, saturation and sharpness, all harking back to our early days using film and darkrooms. From this we then create a first generation jpeg which is uploaded to the online gallery.

We know that in most instances the viewer would be hard pressed to see the difference but we can and it is important to us to give the very best quality at all times.

And that’s partly why we’ve been reluctant to offer lo-res digital files. We know others do it but we take pride in producing quality images which we feel is lost when reduced to postage stamp sized 72dpi files. Therefore, anyone ordering a digital copy can be assured they are receiving a decent sized image at sensible resolution
